PB Apothecary is an informational platform dedicated to sharing research and study-based insights on mushrooms used as medicine. While some of the material relates to mushrooms grown and sold by Virginia Bison Co., the purpose of this site is not to steer you toward any specific purchase, but to help you make informed decisions about what may work best for you. For that reason, you may also find information about mushrooms that are not produced or sold by Virginia Bison Co.
So why would a bison farm start producing medicinal mushrooms?
The answer is practical. The same resources found in bison farming—animal manure, feed grain, skilled farm labor, and agricultural know-how—are also the foundations of successful mushroom cultivation, and all of them are already abundant on the farm.
As you explore the world of commercially produced medicinal mushrooms, you will notice a few important realities. Many products are grown in China. Most list rice as a primary ingredient. And most are produced from mycelium rather than the fruiting body. Locally grown mushroom medicinals harvested from the fruiting body offer far greater compound complexity and a cleaner final product. By contrast, mycelium grown on rice inevitably leaves a large percentage of rice in your capsules or tea.
